Popular festivals in Nerja
Nerja is the destination where Andalusian tradition blends with the blue of the Mediterranean. Known for its white houses and the iconic Balcón de Europa, this jewel of the Costa del Sol awaits you with a vibrant calendar
1. Three Kings Parade (5th January)
Their Majesties arrive in Nerja on a magical afternoon, usually starting from the Church of El Salvador. The parade passes through key points such as Calle Pintada and Plaza Cantarero, culminating in the adoration of the Baby Jesus at the iconic Balcón de Europa.
2. Festival of San Antón (16th and 17th January)
This is one of the most authentic and welcoming traditions. On the afternoon of the 16th, the streets are lit up with bonfires from 6 or 7 pm. On the 17th, after mass and the procession, the festivities continue with a popular street party and the flavour of typical local products.
3. Nerja Carnival (between 12 and 15 February):
An explosion of colour and costumes parades through the main streets of Nerja, culminating in the unique ‘burial of the chanquete’ the day after the parade.
4. Holy Week (end of March to beginning of April):
The Holy Week processions take place in the town centre, where they wind their way through the streets. We can enjoy the processions on Wednesday, Thursday (the most important day), Friday, and culminating on Easter Sunday.
5. Residents' Day (end of April):
A multi-cultural day where Nerja's large international community shares its cuisine and folklore, usually held at the end of April.
6. Cruces de Mayo (3rd of May):
The town is filled with floral altars, music and regional dances while visitors sample the typical cane honey.
7. Festival of San Isidro (15 May):
From the Balcón de Europa, a procession of decorated carts and horses accompanies the saint to the Caves of Nerja. People dress in traditional costumes for a day of music and conviviality, with food, drink, dancing and singing until late into the night.
8. Night of San Juan (23rd and 24th June):
The Night of San Juan in Nerja is celebrated on the night of 23rd to 24th June, mainly on Burriana beach, with the traditional ‘burning of the Júa’ (a rag doll representing the negative aspects of the previous year) at midnight. Various events are held, including live concerts, bonfires, and the custom of bathing in the sea to purify oneself, attracting thousands of people to welcome the summer.
9. Nerja Cave International Music and Dance Festival (late July to early August):
This is one of Spain's most iconic and oldest cultural events, with over 60 years of history. The festival ranges from flamenco and classical ballet to pop, rock, and classical music. Legends such as Maya Plisétskaya, Yehudi Menuhin, and Paco de Lucía have graced its stages.
10. Day of the Virgin of Carmen (16th July):
A moving maritime procession where fishermen pay tribute to their patron saint. Flowers are offered and the Virgin is carried to the sea in a maritime procession. There are fireworks and a large popular festival accompanied by traditional music and dancing from the area.
11. White Party (14th August):
This is the summer event par excellence. It is held on El Salón Beach and the only requirement is to be dressed entirely in white. There is live music, DJs and a spectacular atmosphere next to the Balcón de Europa.
12. Festival of the Three Cultures (Frigiliana, end of August):
Just 10 minutes from Nerja, this festival is one of the most important events in Andalusia in August. It offers a giant craft market, the famous Tapas Route, concerts and fireworks displays in one of the most beautiful villages in Spain.
13. Feria de las Maravillas in Maro (between 5 and 8 September):
This is the most important festival of the month in the neighbouring district of Maro. It is celebrated in honour of its patron saint, the Virgen de las Maravillas, with a tradition dating back three centuries. On this day, there is a procession of the Virgin through the streets, as well as fireworks and live music.
14. Tourist's Day (end of September):
Often coinciding with World Tourism Day (27th September) Nerja organizes several days of celebrations to honor its visitors. These include live music, folk dance performances and tastings of traditional local foods.
15. Festival of Nerja (8th to 12th October):
A festival in celebration of the patron Saints of Nerja, Our Virgin of Angustías and Saint Michael the Archangel. During these days, there are processions and activities that are divided between the town centre for the daytime fair and the fairgrounds for the night-time fair, also located in the centre, where you can find night-time attractions for adults and children.
16. Maroween (31st October):
The programmed activities include a terrifying parade with the Vaso Largo brass band, chestnut and sweet potato tasting, trick-or-treating around the town with sweets being handed out, costume competitions and façade decoration.
17. Christmas in Nerja (end of November to December):
This is celebrated with a programme of over 120 activities that runs from the end of November until Three Kings Day. Among the main activities, we can highlight the lighting ceremony at the Balcón de Europa and its surroundings, pastoral gatherings, processions, Christmas concerts at the Church of San Salvador, Santa Claus' parade on 23rd December, Midnight Mass on the afternoon of 24th December, the living nativity scene in the protected area, New Year's Eve, when you can celebrate the chimes live at the legendary Balcón de Europa and welcome in the new year, and last but not least, for the little ones, the festivities will end with the Three Kings parade on 5th January.
